This guide will show you step-by-step, how to get DOOM I and II running and how you can add mods on top of it.

I am by no means an expert on Doom source ports or mods.

If you have any problems customizing the options, running the source port, or running mods let me know in the trouble shoot sticky below

Brutal Doom Russian Overkill Download Mod Db

First You will need a copy of Ultimate DOOM or DOOM II Hell on Earth
1. Download your copy of Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II Hell on Earth, and any other expansions you might have (TNT, Plutonia, etc.). You can buy a copy from Steam or GOG.
- If you don't have a copy, no problem. Go to this link and download them here and unzip them. They will be referred to as IWADs in the instructions below.

Now you need to download a doom source port. This will let you play Doom on modern hardware as well as add additional options (higher resolutions, customizable controls, mouse look,play multiplayer or CO-OP, etc.)
There are three most common source ports. Below will give you a summary of each.
1. Read over the summeries and download one.
2. Unzip the file. Keep everything in the folder there.
- If you just downloaded the IWADs, drag and drop them into the source port folder
ZDOOM - Ol' faithful. I first played the original dooms on this with only keyboard controls.
+ If you have a **** computer this run doom great. Like can barely run Half-Life **** computer, this will run Doom smoothly.
+ It's on it's final version (2.8.1) an will not need updating
- Not all mods will be supported on here and some mod maps set with fany effects (custome lighting, rain, and fog) my not look right on it

+ Mostly built mostly for multilayer but can still be used for singleplayer.

GZDOOM - An upgraded version of ZDOOM. Top of the line source port
+ Run fany effects (custome lighting, rain, and fog) used in some custom map mods
+ Most mods run on the newest or older version of it
- Some complex maps mods and gameplay mods may cause lag on some weaker PCs
- Sometimes crashes (very rare, but it occurs)

At this point you should have Doom installed on Steam or GOG (or downlaod IWAD files in the source port folder) and a extracted source port file.
1. Open the source port file.
2. Find the Application with the source ports name on it.
3. Launch it.
4. If you have a downloaded legal copy, your Doom games will show up in a box autimatically.
- If you just downloaded the IWADs,bthe application it will ask you where the IWAD file is.
- Direct it to the source port's file and hit ok.
- This should make the games show up in a box.
5. Select which game you want and hit play
Congrats, you have DOOM up and running and should be looking a one of these title on screen.

You will have to make some changes in the options menu if you want more modern controls.
The options menus are pretty self explanatory, but here are some vital changes to make:
- Go to customize controls and change all the necessary controls. (Backspace to clear and enter to save)
- Go to mouse options and hit yes to enable mouse and always mouselook
- Go to HUD options and enable default crossair to cross 1 or what ever you perfer
- Go to Opengl options. Click on texture options. Change Texture Filter Mode to none. (This will make the enemies sprite look like pixel sprites and not blurry green globs of mess)

1. Go onto google and download some mods.There are many to chose from and on the download page should tell you what the mod does, what source port to run it with, etc.
There are some mod suggestions below
2. Unzip the file. There will be a pk3 or WAD file in there.
3. Open your source port file and have it next to your open mod file
4. Simply drag and drop the mod pk3 or wad file over the source port's application.
5. Pick which Doom game to play it
Then you're done!

- If the type of source port you using can't run the mod, the game will not launch.
- Multiple mods can stacked and dragged to the launcher. Ex.( If you want a map set mod with a gameplay mod, just drag both to the application together.)

There are many types of mods out there. Gameplay, music,addtional maps, and Total Convertions. Just looks some up and try them out.

Gameplay Mods:
Smooth Doom : Classic Doom gameplay with smoother animated sprites and more gore. Great if you want vanilla Doom gameplay with a slight update

Brutal Doom : Overhauls the guns and enemies. Body shot damage, more aggressive enemies and manual reloads and iron sights on weapons

IDKFA Soundtrack Mod v2 : Updates the midi music from DOOM 1 to professionally remade pieces with the original vibe of Bobby Prince's music in mind. No DOOM 2 music though

Doom Metal Vol.4 : Updates the midi music for DOOM 1 and 2. While not as professional as IDKFA, it adds its own charm with more rough and aggressive sounding renditions
