Update: So, I've had my new puppy home for nearly a month, (she's almost 11 weeks old at this point) and I've followed Dr. Yin's book almost to the letter and I can now FULLY attest that this is a MARVELOUS resource! Excellent. This book was recommended by quite a few people who are in a wire-haired pointing griffin club I belong to online. Yin teaches positive training training for your puppy, which includes her famous Learn to Ear program. Many helpful illustrations. I also found the beginning section covering what a puppy experiences the first 8 weeks of its life and how the breeder can help you by preparing the puppy for its new home--new information for me.

[02/14/2015] My partner and I just got a new puppy, and we decided to follow the techniques in this book. He even took a week off work to try the '7 Days' of the title. After the first day, the puppy is already taking well to saying 'please' by sitting when he wants a treat or a toy. I am impressed already, and if we can indeed have a generally polite puppy in seven days or even a month, I will raise this to 5 stars, so I will be sure to report back. :)

If you have militant self-discipline, and want to train your dog in the same way, this book will probably really suit you. As for myself, I knew right from the start it was too demanding for me, and I would never have the time or motivation to be follow such a regimented program. So, I will say that our dog ended up as trained as we wanted her, but I doubt Sophia Yin would be impressed. At all. Not even a little. Nope.

Really enjoyed this read! Taught me a lot about how to get started when I get a new puppy. Also, although some of the stuff in this book was definitely stuff I've heard before, there were a lot of nuances in it that I haven't heard before, so I really appreciated that!
I'm confident I'll be referring back to this book when I get my puppy in August!

If you have the time to stay home for the first week with your dog, this is an excellent book. Basically, the author has you supervise your puppy 100% of the time or have it in a safe, limited area. The book is filled with series of photos illustrating every step in each behavior being taught. I like that the learn to earn method and the sit to 'say, please' method.
There are a few things I don't like about the book.
- The font size is often tiny, maybe an 8 font.

This is a fabulous book for any puppy owner. Dr. Yin uses simple, clear, humorous language (accompanied by colored pictures) to illustrate effective training techniques and canine body language. I really appreciated that everything was thoroughly explained and backed by science.

This trainers technique works very well! That being said her technique is for a very disciplined person. In order to follow it 100% I would had to read the book before getting my puppy and stayed home from work. If you have the time and discipline I would recommend this book/technique. The book was very nice in that it had a lot of visual examples. I would have given it a high review if I thought it was more for the average person.

I really liked this book and it gave good ideas on training. Although keeping my new puppy/dog at my side 18hours of the day is a bit unrealistic. Most people have to work outside the home and keeping a small dog in a crate for 10 hours just wouldn't be healthy but cruel. It's the times that the dog isn't supervised that they tend to pee and get into mischief, meaning while I'm at work. How to fix that, is the real issue

Better than expected! A necessity!
This book was very informative and easy to read. I have two adult dogs and I’m preparing to train a new puppy. This book was exactly what I was looking for. It walks you step by step through the training process. Such a great small investment for big rewards with my dogs!

Excellent book for training your new puppy. I wish I had read it before Ryka came home. We've only been working on the behaviors for one day, and there is a vast improvement. She is becoming a very polite dog. I highly recommend this book for all prospective puppy owners. Give yourself plenty of time to read it and be prepared before puppy comes home. You can thank me later.
This training program seems pretty intense, but the book does a good job of reinforcing the idea that everything you do with your dog is training it how to act. We'll be getting a puppy soon, and we'll be using at least some of these tips. I'll be reading a few other training books first, so it's hard to know right now which one we'll stick closest to.

Beautifully simple, yet detailed-enough, descriptions of basic puppy manners protocol. Easy to understand and follow. Every sentence is dense with pertinent information. Follow this to the letter and you'll be well on your way to a well-behaved canine family member.

Great training manual
This was a quick to read, clear and easy to understand guide to dog training. I immediately shared it with my mother, who will be getting a littermate of my puppy. Hopefully we will have perfectly behaved puppies really soon.

It was a good book to read before we got our first puppy. I learned a lot. The training tips have really helped. Now our Texas Heeler is four months old and very well behaved. The tips in the book really helped us achieve that.
Best puppy training book available!! I followed it religiously and although it was challenging to be as diligent as required, it was totally worth it. My now 2-year old is a happy, well mannered, family dog.

The hubby brought this book home from the vet and put it right into my hands. I was skeptical. A perfect puppy in 7 days? Sounded way too good to be true.
Turns out a perfect puppy in 7 days isn't unattainable! My puppy isn't perfect, but we've only been following the plan for 2 days. There are a lot of books out there to tell you how to raise and train a puppy. Some are good, some are not. Perfect Puppy in 7 Days is one of the better ones. Dr. Yin is a veterinarian and an applied animal behaviorist, and she manages to put into this one small book a wealth of technique and training to get a new puppy owner off to the right start.

This book offers a lot of unique and useful training tips for how to start your puppy off right. There are plenty of high quality pictures that clearly demonstrate each exercise in the appropriate way. It is a very easy read and it packs a lot of information into a relatively short book. I appreciated how the book covered almost all of the areas of concern I have with a puppy (potty training, general training, handling the puppy, socialization, biting, etc).

The title notwithstanding, lots of useful ideas. I'm not sure I want or need to keep my dog on a leash during those first few weeks, though I think it might be helpful for those who don't have kids or have forgotten those toddler years. A puppy is just a furry toddler, and requires about as much supervision (though thankfully, will nap much better than my children ever did!).
